Import Formation Tops
"Tops" are named depth markers, formation boundaries, plotted on the GeoSteering cross-section. One top can be flagged as the Sweet Spot (your target zone).

Tops import works differently from Survey and Log import: it's a 2-step flow with a directly editable table, not a column-mapping wizard, and there's no separate dry-run/confirm step — clicking Import commits immediately.
Where to Import Tops
-
Open a project and go to the GeoSteering tab.
-
In the left data/objects panel, find your well's node, then its Tops node.
-
Click the + (create) button on the Tops node to open Import Tops.

Note: unlike Trajectory and Logs, existing tops don't have their own Edit/Delete menu in this panel — running Import Tops again is how you add to or update them.
Step 1 — Import Tops (choose your source)
| Tab | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drive | Pick a file already stored in GeoMaster Drive |
| Upload | Upload a new file from your computer |
| Blank Spreadsheet | A grid pre-set with Title, MD, and Sweet Spot columns — type your tops in directly |
Click Continue to move to the review step.

Step 2 — Review Tops
Whatever you brought in — file or blank spreadsheet — lands in one editable table. If your source was a multi-sheet Excel file, a Sheet dropdown appears above the table.
MD unit — a required dropdown above the table; you must choose the unit your MD values are in before you can import.
The tops table — one row per top, each with:
| Column | Notes |
|---|---|
| Title | Required; must be unique — duplicate titles are highlighted red and block import |
| MD | Required, numeric |
| Sweet Spot | Checkbox — checking it on one row automatically unchecks it on every other row, since only one top can be the sweet spot |
| Description | Optional free text |
Use the + at the bottom of the table to add another row, or the trash icon on a row to remove it (you can't remove the last remaining row — at least one top is required).
Before you can click Import, GeoMaster checks that:
-
an MD unit is selected,
-
every row has a title and an MD value,
-
no two rows share the same title,
-
there's at least one row.
Any of these missing shows an inline error and blocks the import.

Committing
Click Import. There's no separate confirmation screen — this commits directly. On success, a "Import completed." toast appears and the dialog closes; your tops now show under the well's Tops node and on the GeoSteering cross-section.

Import Logs
"Logs" are depth-indexed curve data (gamma ray, resistivity, and similar LWD/MWD curves) plotted alongside the trajectory in the GeoSteering cross-section.
Import Well Plans
A Well Plan is the pre-drill planned trajectory (MD/INC/AZI) for a well, imported the same way as actual survey data, and plotted alongside it on the…
