Reference Wells

A GeoMatch correlates your geosteering well against a reference well, an offset or type well brought into the project specifically to correlate against.

Reference Wells and Connect

A GeoMatch correlates your geosteering well against a reference well, an offset or type well brought into the project specifically to correlate against. Reference wells live in their own section of the data panel, separate from your geosteering well.

Reference Bores

In the left data panel, below your well's own section, there's a Reference Bores node.

Click the + on it to open Add Reference Well. This uses the same well and wellbore picker as project creation: search and pick an existing well (with its wellbore auto-selected if it only has one, or a list to choose from if it has several), or click + New Well to create one on the spot. Click Add as Reference to confirm.

The well itself isn't duplicated or copied, it's linked to this project as a reference. The same well can be a reference well in more than one project.

Preparing a Reference Well

Once added, a reference well shows up under Reference Bores with its own child nodes, just like your primary well: a Trajectory slot, a Logs node, and a Tops node.

Click the + on the reference well itself to import its trajectory, the same Import Survey flow used for your primary well. Its Logs and Tops nodes work the same way too, using the same import wizard documented elsewhere. A reference well needs its own trajectory and log data prepared before it's useful for correlation.

If the reference well is the one currently in use by your active GeoMatch, it's marked with an active badge in the list.

Managing a Reference Well

Each reference well has a ⋯ menu with three options:

OptionWhat it does
Well PropertyOpens the same well edit form used everywhere else in GeoMaster (title, field, owner/operator, coordinates, elevation)
Wellbore PropertyOpens the wellbore's edit form
RemoveUnlinks the well from this project

Removing a reference well doesn't delete the underlying well or wellbore, it stays available to any other project using it. You'll be asked to confirm before it's removed.

Connect

The Connect button in the toolbar (shown with an attachment icon) is how you activate a GeoMatch, or switch which one is active.

Opening it shows your current status:

  • If a GeoMatch is active, a green Connected badge with its title, and a Ref Well badge showing which reference well it's using.

  • If nothing is active, it simply says No GeoMatch connected.

Below that, a dropdown lists every GeoMatch in the project by title. Pick one, then:

  • Click Connect to activate it (or Reconnect if it's already the active one, useful for refreshing its data).

  • Click Disconnect to deactivate whatever's currently connected, shown only while a GeoMatch is active.
