GeoMatch is GeoMaster's correlation tool. It compares a log curve from the well you're geosteering against the same kind of log curve from a reference (offset/type) well, lets you line them up visually, and uses that alignment to depth-shift and interpret formation boundaries in the well you're actively drilling.
Only one GeoMatch can be active per project at a time. If you already have one active and start creating a new one, GeoMaster warns you first: "Creating a new GeoMatch will disable the one that's currently active. Do you want to continue?"
Opening Create GeoMatch
From the GeoSteering toolbar, click Create GeoMatch (in the same toolbar group as the segment-editing tools).
📸 Screenshot 1: The "Create GeoMatch" button in the toolbar.
📸 Screenshot 2: The "Disable Active GeoMatch?" confirmation dialog, shown only if a GeoMatch is already active.
The Create GeoMatch Form
The dialog is a two-column layout: a form on the left, a live correlation plot on the right.
Title and VS
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Title | Required, minimum 3 characters |
| VS | Vertical Section azimuth, 0 to 360, clamped to that range |
Changing VS resets whatever Starting Point you'd already picked (see below), since it changes the section the trajectory is projected along.
Choosing the two wells
Two parallel groups of dropdowns, cascading (each one only enables once its parent is chosen):
| Side | Dropdowns |
|---|---|
| Geosteering Well | Well → Trajectory → Log |
| Reference Well | Well → Trajectory → Log |
The Geosteering Well is the one you're actively drilling and interpreting. The Reference Well is the offset/type well you're correlating against. Changing the Geosteering Well or its Trajectory clears the Starting Point, since it's tied to that specific trajectory.
Below the well selectors, a Show Reference Tops checkbox overlays the reference well's formation tops on the plot, if it has any.

Starting Point
This is the tie-point that anchors the correlation. It only becomes available once you've picked a Geosteering Trajectory.
-
Click Select On Plots (disabled until a Geosteering Trajectory is chosen).
-
Click directly on the plot to place the starting point on the Geosteering well's trajectory.
-
Once placed, four read-only values appear: TVD, TVDSS, VS, and MD.
If GeoMaster can't prepare the trajectory for point selection, an inline warning appears: "Couldn't prepare the trajectory. Please try again." A Starting Point is required, you can't submit the form without one.
📸 Screenshot 4: The "Select On Plots" button active, cursor about to click a point on the trajectory.
📸 Screenshot 5: The Starting Point readouts (TVD/TVDSS/VS/MD) populated after a point is selected.
Depth Shift
A numeric field. As you type, it updates live (throttled) and immediately moves the reference log's plotted position on the correlation plot, so you can nudge it and watch the two curves line up before committing to anything.
📸 Screenshot 6: The Depth Shift field with the reference log visibly offset on the plot as a result.
The Correlation Plot
The right-hand panel shows both logs side by side (or overlaid) against depth, live-updating as you change Depth Shift or the log/well selections. This is the visual reference you use to judge whether your Starting Point and Depth Shift produce a sensible correlation before creating the GeoMatch.

Creating It
Click Create. On success you'll see a "GeoMatch created successfully" toast and the dialog closes. Your new GeoMatch is now the active one for the project, and appears as a node in the left data panel under GeoMatch.
After Creating: Property and Delete
Each GeoMatch in the sidebar has a ⋯ menu with Edit and Delete.
Edit opens a "Geomatch Property" panel, but it's worth knowing this is currently read-only: Title, Depth Shift, and the Starting Point values are all shown but disabled, and nothing you'd change here is actually saved back. Treat it as a summary view, not an editing form, until that changes.
Delete is fully functional: a confirmation dialog ("'<title>' GeoMatch Well will be deleted. Are you sure?") followed by permanent deletion.

What's Next
Creating a GeoMatch is the starting point. Refining it (adjusting segment boundaries, depth-shifting specific intervals, working with the Kick-Off Point) and connecting additional reference wells are covered in the next parts of this series.
Formatting a Selected Element
Style, Fill, Label, and Survey Points are one idea, not four: click something on the plot to select it (a formation layer, a top marker, a trajectory, a log…
Segments and Boundaries
Once a GeoMatch is active, the correlation between your two wells is broken into segments, intervals between boundary points along the Vertical Section.
