DrillTracker — Plan vs Actual

DrillTracker is GeoMaster's well trajectory monitoring module. It compares the planned well path against the actual drilled trajectory in real time, calculates positional uncertainty, and raises alerts when deviation thresholds are exceeded.

Opening DrillTracker

From the project workspace, click the DrillTracker tab in the top navigation bar.

DrillTracker requires:

  • A planned trajectory (the well programme target path)

  • An actual trajectory (survey stations or live WITSML data)

If either is missing, DrillTracker will prompt you to import or connect the relevant data.

Importing the Planned Trajectory

The planned trajectory is the target well path from your well programme. To import:

  1. Go to DrillTracker → Plan → Import

  2. Upload a CSV file with columns: MD, INC, AZI (or TVDSS, N, E)

  3. Confirm the column mapping

  4. Click Import Plan

Note: The planned trajectory does not change during the well. If the well programme is revised (a sidetrack, for example), create a new plan version rather than overwriting the original.

Actual Trajectory Sources

DrillTracker can receive actual trajectory data from:

SourceHow to Connect
Manual survey importDrillTracker → Actual → Import Survey CSV
WITSML live feedConfigure in Project Settings → WITSML (see WITSML section)
Paste from MWD reportDrillTracker → Actual → Paste Stations

When connected to a WITSML feed, new survey stations appear automatically as they are received from the wellsite MWD/LWD system.

Reading the DrillTracker View

DrillTracker displays the plan and actual trajectories in three views, accessible via tabs:

3D View

A three-dimensional plot of both trajectories in North/East/TVDSS space. Rotate by clicking and dragging. Useful for visualising dogleg sections and anti-collision context.

2D Plan View (Top View)

A horizontal projection (map view) showing plan vs actual in the North/East plane. Useful for azimuth deviation.

2D Section View (Side View)

A vertical cross-section showing plan vs actual in the MD/TVDSS plane. Useful for inclination deviation.

Key Metrics Panel (Right Sidebar)

MetricDescription
Current MDDepth of the deepest actual survey station
InclinationCurrent well inclination (degrees from vertical)
AzimuthCurrent well direction (degrees from North)
TVDTrue Vertical Depth at current MD
DLSDogleg Severity at current station (°/30m or °/100ft)
Lateral displacementHorizontal distance between plan and actual at current MD
TVD differenceVertical difference between plan and actual at current MD

Deviation Alerts

GeoMaster raises visual alerts when the actual trajectory deviates beyond configured thresholds.

Default Thresholds

ParameterAlert LevelDefault Value
Lateral displacementWarning5 m

TVD differenceWarning3 m
TVD differenceCritical10 m
DLSWarning3 °/30m
DLSCritical5 °/30m

Configuring Thresholds

Go to Project Settings → Alert Thresholds to adjust values for your specific well programme.

Alert Behaviour

  • Warning (amber): Displayed in the metrics panel. No interruption to workflow.

  • Critical (red): Banner alert across the top of the workspace. Sent as notification to all project team members.

Understanding Dogleg Severity (DLS)

Dogleg Severity (DLS) measures the rate of change of well direction — how sharply the wellbore is turning — expressed as degrees per 30 metres (metric) or degrees per 100 feet (imperial).

Why DLS matters for DrillTracker:

  • High DLS can indicate an unplanned direction change (formation kick, tool malfunction)

  • Sustained high DLS increases fatigue on drill string components

  • DLS values above the BHA design limit can cause stuck pipe or connection failures

GeoMaster calculates DLS using the Minimum Curvature Method, which is the industry standard.

Anti-Collision Awareness

DrillTracker displays offset well trajectories in the 3D view to support anti-collision awareness. To add offset wells:

  1. Go to DrillTracker → Anti-Collision → Add Offset Well

  2. Upload the offset well survey (CSV)

  3. Set a minimum separation distance alert threshold

Important: GeoMaster's anti-collision display is for awareness only. It is not a substitute for a certified anti-collision software system (e.g. COMPASS, WellPlan) when working in congested well slots or high-risk environments.

Exporting DrillTracker Reports

  1. Click Export in the top-right of the DrillTracker view

  2. Choose:

  • Survey Report — actual stations with TVD, N, E, DLS

  • Deviation Report — plan vs actual comparison at each station

  • Plot Export — PNG or PDF of the current view

  1. Click Download
