WITSML & Data Integration

GeoMaster supports real-time data ingestion via the WITSML standard, as well as static data import via LAS files, CSV surveys, and Petrel exports. This section covers how to connect a live data feed and import historical or reference data.

What is WITSML?

WITSML (Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language) is the industry-standard protocol for transmitting drilling and logging data from the wellsite to remote systems. It is maintained by Energistics.

GeoMaster supports:

  • WITSML 1.4.1.1 — the most widely deployed version

  • WITSML 2.0 — the current standard with improved data models

Data types available via WITSML include:

  • MWD/LWD logs (GR, resistivity, density, neutron, sonic)

  • Real-time survey stations (MD, INC, AZI)

  • Drilling parameters (WOB, RPM, ROP, torque, standpipe pressure)

  • Mud parameters (flow rate, density, temperature)

  • Bit depth and block position

Connecting a WITSML Server

To connect GeoMaster to a live WITSML feed:

  1. Go to Project Settings → WITSML Connection

  2. Click Add Connection

  3. Enter the following details:

FieldDescription
Server URLThe WITSML server endpoint (provided by your data service or NOC)
WITSML Version1.4.1.1 or 2.0
UsernameWITSML server credentials
PasswordWITSML server credentials
Well UIDThe unique identifier for the target well on the WITSML server
Wellbore UIDThe specific wellbore identifier
  1. Click Test Connection to verify credentials and server availability

  2. If the test is successful, click Save & Activate

Once connected, the Data Status indicator in the bottom bar turns green and shows the timestamp of the last received data packet.

Monitoring Real-Time Data

When a WITSML connection is active:

  • Logs update live in the Geosteering workspace as new data arrives

  • Survey stations appear in DrillTracker as MWD transmits new depth stations

  • Drilling parameters are visible in Data → Real-Time Dashboard

Data Latency

WITSML data latency depends on the wellsite setup. Typical values:

SetupExpected Latency
Satellite (VSAT)30–120 seconds
Broadband (fibre/microwave)5–30 seconds
Direct NOC feedNear real-time (< 5 seconds)

GeoMaster polls the WITSML server at a configurable interval (default: 30 seconds). To change the poll interval, go to Project Settings → WITSML → Poll Interval.

WITSML Data Mapping

When GeoMaster first connects to a WITSML server, it may need you to map the incoming data channels to GeoMaster's internal log types.

  1. Go to Data → WITSML → Channel Mapping

  2. For each incoming channel, select the corresponding GeoMaster log type from the dropdown:

  • Gamma Ray

  • Deep Resistivity

  • Medium Resistivity

  • Shallow Resistivity

  • Bulk Density

  • Neutron Porosity

  • Bit Depth

  • Block Position

  • etc.

  1. Click Save Mapping

Once mapped, GeoMaster will correctly label and scale the incoming channels.

Importing LAS Files

LAS (Log ASCII Standard) files contain petrophysical log data from a wireline or LWD run. To import:

  1. Go to Data → Logs → Import LAS

  2. Select the LAS file from your computer

  3. GeoMaster reads the header and lists available curves

  4. Select which curves to import

  5. Confirm the depth reference (KB, MSL, or LAT)

  6. Click Import

Imported LAS logs are available as static log tracks in the Geosteering workspace alongside any real-time WITSML data.

Tip: If your LAS file uses a different depth reference than your project, GeoMaster will ask you to confirm the offset. Incorrect depth references are a common cause of log-to-core and log-to-seismic depth mismatches.

Importing Survey Data (CSV)

See Project & Well Management → Importing Survey Data for CSV survey import instructions.

Importing Petrel Data

GeoMaster accepts Petrel-format exports for:

  • Well trajectories (from Petrel Well Correlation)

  • Formation tops (from Petrel Stratigraphy)

  • Seismic horizons (limited support — contact support@geomaster.uk for details)

To import Petrel data:

  1. In Petrel, export your data as a Petrel-format file

  2. In GeoMaster, go to Data → Import → Petrel Format

  3. Select the file and confirm the data type

  4. Click Import
