Glossary

TermDefinition
AZIAzimuth. The compass direction of the wellbore, measured in degrees clockwise from North.
BHABottom Hole Assembly. The lower portion of the drill string, including drill bit, stabilisers, MWD/LWD tools, and motor or RSS.
DLSDogleg Severity. The rate of change of well direction, expressed as degrees per 30 m (metric) or degrees per 100 ft (imperial).
GRGamma Ray. A petrophysical log measuring natural radioactivity of the formation. High GR typically indicates shale; low GR indicates sand, carbonate, or evaporite.
INCInclination. The angle of the wellbore from vertical, measured in degrees.
KBKelly Bushing. The datum at the surface from which measured depth (MD) is referenced on most wells.
LASLog ASCII Standard. A standard file format for storing petrophysical well log data.
LookAheadGeoMaster module that projects the geological model ahead of the drill bit based on the current interpretation.
LWDLogging While Drilling. Measurement tools integrated into the BHA that acquire formation data in real time as the well is drilled.
MDMeasured Depth. The depth of the wellbore measured along the actual path of the well, from the surface reference (KB, MSL, or LAT).
MWDMeasurement While Drilling. Tools in the BHA that transmit directional data (inclination, azimuth, tool face) and basic drilling parameters in real time.
NOCNetwork Operations Centre (in the context of WITSML data routing — the infrastructure hub through which wellsite data is transmitted to remote users).
RSSRotary Steerable System. A directional drilling tool that steers the bit while rotating, enabling smoother wellbore geometry than a mud motor.
TSTTrue Stratigraphic Thickness. Formation thickness measured perpendicular to the formation dip. The correct thickness measurement for deviated and horizontal wells in dipping formations.
TVDTrue Vertical Depth. The vertical depth of the wellbore, measured from the surface datum.
TVDSSTrue Vertical Depth Sub-Sea. TVD measured from mean sea level (MSL), used when comparing formation depths across wells with different KB elevations.
TVTTrue Vertical Thickness. Formation thickness measured in the vertical direction. Appropriate for near-vertical wells in flat-lying formations.
UWIUnique Well Identifier. A standardised alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a well.
WITSMLWellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language. The industry standard protocol for transmitting drilling and logging data from wellsite to remote systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use GeoMaster without a live WITSML connection? Yes. GeoMaster works fully with imported static data (LAS, CSV surveys, Petrel exports). WITSML integration is optional and used when working on active wells.

Q: Is my data stored securely? All project data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. GeoMaster is hosted on AWS with automated daily backups. For enterprise data residency requirements, contact support@geomaster.uk.

Q: Can I export my data if I cancel my subscription? Yes. You can export all project data (logs, surveys, formation tops, reports) at any time from Data → Export All. We recommend doing this before cancelling.

Q: Does GeoEngine store my conversations? GeoEngine chat history is stored against your project and is visible to all project team members. Conversations are retained for the lifetime of the project.

Q: What happens to my projects if I downgrade my subscription? Projects that exceed your new plan's project limit become read-only. You will not lose data — you can re-activate by upgrading or archiving excess projects.
